Telecom giants await early roll out of 5G connectivity

There is a lot of litigation in the industry, and old cases needs to be settled and new cases must be avoided. The regulatory regime needs to be simple, one that does not create more litigation going forward. The the industry leaders must discuss beyond 5G where India should be taking the lead in developing its own standards

New Delhi: Telecom giants have lauded India's growth in the mobile landscape in the past decade, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani has said that the government should accelerate its efforts to move from 2G to 4G and 5G at the earliest.

While speaking at the inaugural of fifth India Mobile Congress 2021, Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman, Aditya Birla Group, lauded Indian telecom industry as the sector has also witnessed the highest FDI flows in the last two decades. "This mammoth investment is serving the mobility needs of over a billion Indians across five lakh villages. More significantly, despite the substantial investment Indian telecom traiffs and data remain amongst the lowest in the world," he said.

Minister for Communications, Electronics and Information Technology and Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said, "Indian telecom industry has been rapidly scaling up over the last seven years, from just about six and a half lakh base stations today to close to 23 lakh which is 2.3 million base stations in the country…. The digitization of services is bringing in new opportunities and also creating disruption in the society immensely. We need to cater to these disruptions, and the recent telecom reforms has brought many people oriented procedural changes. With the world moving rapidly towards digital age, Indian entrepreneurs, students, scientists, engineers need to think of new solutions to serve the nation."
